After only 5 months of construction was inaugurated 26th April 1952 the terminal building and a 1,680 meter runway. The new airport replaced the Flughafen Hannover-Vahrenwald no longer be expanded because of its location close to Hanover’s city center. Simultaneously with the opening came the airlines British European Airways, SAS and Pan Am to. In the year after also started KLM (1953), Air France (1954) and Lufthansa (1955) routes from the airport.
In 1956 they started the first charter flights that depart from Hanover. It was the route to Majorca and the Costa Brava. 7th October 1956 opened the Lufthansa route Hamburg-Hannover-Frankfurt with a DC-3 aircraft. 4 tour operators flew a total of 130 charter flights in 1957.
2 million passengers used the airport in 1970 and in 1971 started a Condor route to Palma de Mallorca with a Boeing 747-100 aircraft. The same year, the police opened a helicopter division, based in Langenhagen. They operate today with several helicopters from the site.
The 3 terminals operated in 2008, 5,637,965 passengers and is thus Germany’s ninth biggest. Royal Air Force uses the military terminal D for transporting personnel.
