Azerbaijan Airlines (Azal, Azeri: Azərbaycan Hava Yolları) is the national airline of Azerbaijan based in Baku. The airline is owned by the state and operates scheduled passenger and cargo flights from Baku to the CIS, Europe, China and the Middle East, as well as domestic flights. Its main base is Heydar Aliyev International Airport, Baku.
The history of passenger air transport in the Republic of Azerbaijan began in 1923 when it began to operate regular passenger flights between Baku and Tbilisi on planes made in Germany “Junkers”. Before independence in 1991 Azerbaijan republic of Azerbaijan Airlines (Azal) is part of Aeroflot.
Being one branch of Aeroflot, the national airline “Azerbaijan Hava Yollari” only serve domestic flights within the Soviet Union because Aeroflot has a monopoly on international flights.
Now when Azerbaijan became an independent country Azerbaijan Airlines as the national airline is proud to provide quality service and hospitality to consumers in the international aviation market based on standards and recommendations of ICAO and IATA.
With the geographic advantages and high capacity handling performed Heydar Aliyev International Airport is fast becoming a busy hub in the region for transit and connecting flights between East and West, North and South.
On October 9, 2000 an historic event occurred in the history of Azerbaijan Airlines‘ new Boeing 757-200 aircraft owned by the first new airline landed in Heydar Aliyev Airport. Since then the plane of Azerbaijan Airlines fleet is gradually replaced by Boeing, Airbus and since 2005 signed a contract with Airbus to bring in the new Airbus aircraft.
The first Airbus A319, named after the second largest city in Azerbaijan “Cannabis” to join the fleet of aircraft on September 2, 2005. On August 24, 2007 a new aircraft – ATR 42-500, Heydar Aliyev arrived at the airport.
The aircraft is now beroperadi in domestic flights and also the purpose of this internasional.Maskapai also held a significant investment in the provision of new aircraft, which increases passenger comfort and safety.
