The club was founded in 1925 as Unione Sportive Fiumana and played until after the Second World War in the Italian League. After the war the territory was transferred to Yugoslavia and the name was changed in Rijeka, Kvarner and played one season in the highest class of Yugoslavia.

On June 3, 1954 changed the name to NK Rijeka and in 1957 the club played again in the highest class and stayed there a middle position to 1964/65 when the 4th place was reached, the next season the club was fourth but fell away, Rijeka in 1968 but was saved from relegation last because the league expanded from 16 to 18 clubs, it was only a reprieve, relegated the following season the club yet.
The return was celebrated in 1974 and would remain there until the dismemberment of Yugoslavia. After two quiet seasons Rijeka finished 5th in 1977 and 1978, which last year also brought the cup, like the following season and played as the first European club.
After several seasons in the middle in 1984 the club finished in a tie for 3rd place with Zeljeznicar Sarajevo. Until 1990, Rijeka always in the top ten finish. The last season in the Yugoslav league was ended with a 15th place.
