The club was established in 1999 following a merger between Ikast FS and Herning Fremad. In 2008 the handball club Ikast-Brande Elite Hand Bold under the flag of Midtjylland and started playing as FC Midtjylland Hand Bold. The club also has a team in the Super league Formula.
FC Midtjylland is a Danish Herning multisport club from which the football department is the best known. Herning Fremad was founded in 1918 but was not a high flyer in the Danish football history. In 1983 the club played for the first time in the highest class and was the thirteenth of sixteen participating clubs, the next season was Herning fourteenth and degraded, and then the club could not return.
In 1999 the club was fourth in the 2nd class and merged with Ikast FS, who finished third in order to form FC Midtjylland. Only the first merged team, other departments remained.
