The club was founded in May 1936 under the name Stachanovets. The club was named after Alexei Stakhanov, a legendary miner in the Donets Basin, as communist hero who was seen by his hard work. The club changed its name in 1946 Sjachtjor (“miner”). In 1992 this was replaced by the Ukrainian international Sjachtar that means the same.
The first great result for the club came in 1951, when they finished third in the Football League of the Soviet Union. In the 60′s the club took its first major trophies, especially in the Cup of the Soviet Union.
The team reached the finals three times under the guidance of Coach Oleg Osjenkov, and took out the cup in 1961 and 1962. In the 70s people took back some good results. In 1975 the club was second in the league, which one a ticket to the UEFA Cup took.
In 1978 the third place, the year after, second. Captain and striker Vitali Staroechin, who had scored 26 times, was named best striker and player of the championship.
