The club was founded in 1862 as a cricket club, and began almost twenty years later with football. In 1875 the club moved to Deepdale, a neighborhood in the city. The club was now active in the rugby. This proved to be a failure. The Preston Grasshoppers existed for several years and drew one every week 2-3000 fans, Preston North End could not compete here.
Then the club was also active in football and played on October 5, 1878 the first game against Eagley FC and lost 1-0. In May 1880 the club decided to permanently engage with football.
That season the club played ten games, including on March 26, 1861 against Blackburn Rovers, Rovers won with 16-0. In the following years the stadium was Deepdale improved and expanded. Major William Sudell of Preston wanted the best club in the country make.
His plan was to top players from other areas, especially Scotland. The players were well received and premiums paid work near Preston.
Rival clubs accused Preston of professionalism, which in those days was not common. In 1884 Upton Park played a match for the FA Cup against Preston and lamented joined the Football Association that they played against a Scottish professional team. The FA joined Preston from the tournament.
A threat of 36 teams from the north of England to set up a rival football ensured that the FA professionalism since 1885 approved.
