It was founded in 1952 by Colin Chapman, engineer of the most famous and influential of the postwar automobile. In his famous logo on a yellow background are in fact stylized initials of his full name, Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman.
After the death of its founder and later financial exposures due to its agreements with the De Lorean Motor Company for the construction of the DMC-12, in 1986 the company was acquired by General Motors. In 1993, the U.S. giant in turn ceded it to the Luxembourg ACBN Holdings Ltd., controlled by businessman Romano Artioli, Italian, at that time also owned Bugatti brand. The most recent change of ownership relates to 1996, when control passed to the Malaysian Proton.
