The club can be traced back to 1900 when two smaller clubs joined forces under the name FC the 1900th In 1909 this club merged with two other clubs, but the final formation of the club stood first in 1929 with the admission of two more clubs.
The present name was used from 1932. In the period before the Second World War I led Kaiserslautern somewhat anonymous existence nationally.
After the war, got the team a heyday with the brothers Fritz and Ottmar Walter on the team. In 1951 the club won the first German championship and the club had no fewer than five players with the national team that won the World Cup the 1954th.
Kaiserslautern joined the Bundesliga at the start end of 1963, and here the club remained until, in 1996, with relegation for a single season, but already in 1998 won the club with coach Otto Rehhagel as first gained promotion in German history championship.
