Cadbury plc is a British company, which since 2010 has become a subsidiary of Kraft Foods. The company manufactures confectionery and drinks. Cadbury is currently the only major international manufacturer of candy to use fair trade products and organic farming. These products are marketed by its subsidiary Green & Black’s.
In May 2008, Cadbury Schweppes plc has been split into two entities: Cadbury plc and Dr Pepper Snapple Group which brings together the old U.S. beverages business. In February 2010, Cadbury plc was bought by U.S. group Kraft Foods. Following this acquisition, the company is no longer listed on the London Stock Exchange.
Johann Jacob Schweppe (born in 1740 in Witzenhausen in Hessen, and died in Geneva) German watchmaker and goldsmith developed a method for charging water with carbon dioxide. Schweppe filed a patent for this process in 1783, shortly after Joseph Priestley had discovered the first method for dissolving carbon dioxide in water.
The sparkling water was initially intended for medical use. In 1788, Schweppe moved to Switzerland. In 1790, he founded the Drury Lane in London, a factory to produce soda water.
Created in 1870, the “Indian Tonic” just a drink with extracts of bitter orange and quinine that British settlers who were stationed in India were drinking regularly to guard against malaria. He will become the main product of the company.
