Arsenal was founded under the name of Dial Square FC in 1886 by workers from the Royal Arsenal arms factory, located in Woolwich, east London on the Thames. Renamed Royal Arsenal shortly afterwards, the club adopted the name Woolwich Arsenal when it takes the form of a Limited company in 1891.
The Gunners began in Football League Second Division; they are the first club in the south, in 18931. They then move to the Manor Ground in Plum stead. When they are promoted to the Football League First Division in 1904, there is still no other club in the London area Football League. This geographic isolation of the club handicaps the club, who knows financial problems due to low attendances in matches, played at home.

In 1910, despite the promotion of Tottenham and Chelsea in the elite, the club is close to bankruptcy when businessmen and William Henry Norris bought the Hall. Norris seeks to relocate the club, and while Arsenal is relegated to the Second Division in 1913, he took possession of a new stadium located in the area of High bury, north of the capital: the Arsenal Stadium. The following year, the club logically Woolwich abandons its name and became Arsenal Football Club.
