SM Caen is a French football club in Ligue 1 (France in the top division) plays. The SM in the club’s name stands for Stade Malherbe. Malherbe is the Frenchman François de Malherbe, who was born in 1555 in Caen, a French town in the Lower Normandy region. In 1897 the first football club founded in Caen.
The club originated in 1897, was called l’UA Lycée Malherbe. In 1908 the name changed in Club Malherbe Caen. In 1913 following the merger with Club Sportif Caennais. Since then the club Stade Malherbe Caen.
In 1985 the club received the status of professional club. Four years later the club changed its name again. The club is now called Stade Malherbe Caen Calvados Normandy, or simply SM Caen.
The club was found in Ligue 1 of 1988 t / m 95, 1996-97, 2004-05 and from 2007 t / m 09. In 2009-2010 SM Caen was champion of the Ligue 2 and compelled again promoted again.
