The club was founded under the name Leicester Fosse because it played on a field on the Fosse Road. In 1890 joined the club joined the Football Association and four years later was admitted into the second division. In 1908 the club finished second in the second division, which it was first promoted to the highest level. However, it relegated immediately.
In 1919, due to financial problems, Leicester Fosse was dissolved and the Leicester City Football Club. Since then, the club alternates at the highest level or in the second division.
In 1949 the club won the first FA Cup final where they lost 3-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers. This was repeated in 1961 (lost 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur), 1963 (lost 3-1 to Manchester United) and 1969. (Lost 1-0 to Manchester City) Leicester is still a club record for the most FA Cup finals but played without a win.
In 1971, due to European champions Arsenal’s commitments, was Leicester (as second division champions) were invited to play against against FA Cup finalists Liverpool in the Charity Shield match. Leicester won 1-0.
Jimmy Bloomfield was head coach for the new season that Leicester and remained at the highest level of play until 1978, when it was led by Frank McLintock relegated.
Since then Leicester has the inability to perform to the highest level for so long to stay. In 1973/74 Leicester won the semifinals of the FA Cup where they lost in a replay of Liverpool.
