Leeds City FC was founded in 1904 by supporters of Hunslet FC, an even older club. Already in October 1904 started the club at Elland Road to play. This was the former residence of a rugby team shut down.
When the Football League Second Division in 1905 expanded to 20 clubs Leeds City FC was allowed, together with among others Chelsea. Leeds at that time was the largest city in England without a professional football team.

In April 1912, appointed Herbert Chapman as a trainer and he remained until 1919. When should a disappointed oud player, Charlie Copeland, a complaint to the Football League about paying excessive salaries to players.
Although no evidence was found, the club was punished and thereby dissolved. Port Vale took the place of Leeds. At an auction, all assets of the club auctioned. Star player Billy McCleod was sold to Notts County and Herbert Chapman moved to Arsenal, where he became a legend.
Shortly after Leeds was disbanded, Leeds United was founded. The new player of Elland Road, Yorkshire Amateurs AFC, offered the stadium to Leeds United, now oud player Dick Ray had as a trainer. In May 1920 the club re-admitted into the Football League, along with Cardiff City.
